GSM (grams per square meter) is the standard measure of fabric weight and density, and it's one of the first decisions you'll make when specifying a custom sportswear order - a heavier GSM generally means a thicker, more durable, warmer garment, while a lighter GSM means a cooler, more flexible one. Choosing the right fabric and GSM for a given product isn't just an aesthetic decision - it affects durability, cost, and how well the garment performs for its actual use case.

What GSM Means and Why It Matters

GSM is measured by weighing a one-square-meter piece of fabric. Low-GSM fabrics (roughly 120-180 GSM) are light and breathable, suited to summer training wear or lightweight t-shirts. Mid-range GSM (200-280) is the sweet spot for most tracksuits, hoodies, and everyday activewear. Heavier GSM (300+) shows up in fleece, winter jackets, and premium tracksuits where warmth and structure matter more than breathability. Specifying a GSM range in your tech pack - rather than just naming a fabric - gives a manufacturer a precise target instead of guessing at "medium weight."

Cotton Fleece vs. French Terry

Both are cotton-based knits used heavily in hoodies, sweatshirts, and joggers, but they behave differently. Cotton fleece has a brushed, napped inner surface - warm, soft, and slightly heavier, which is why it's the standard choice for winter hoodies and heavier tracksuits. French terry has looped (not brushed) inner loops, giving it a lighter weight, more breathable feel with a bit more stretch - better suited to year-round sweatshirts, joggers, and pieces meant to layer easily. If your product is a cold-weather hoodie, fleece is usually the right call; if it's a lighter, more versatile piece, French terry often performs better.

Moisture-Wicking Polyester-Spandex for Performance Wear

For gym wear, running kits, and anything marketed on performance rather than comfort alone, a polyester-spandex blend is the standard choice. The polyester content wicks sweat away from the skin and dries fast; the spandex percentage (typically 5-15%) adds stretch and recovery so the garment moves with the body instead of restricting it. This blend is what you want for gym shorts, compression tops, and training singlets - not for casual streetwear, where cotton's hand-feel usually matters more than moisture management.

Nylon-Spandex for Compression and Athletic Fit

Nylon-spandex blends sit a step up from polyester-spandex in stretch recovery and smoothness against the skin, which is why they're the standard for leggings, compression base layers, and fitted athletic tops. Nylon also tends to have a slightly more premium, matte finish than polyester, which matters for brands positioning leggings or compression wear as a higher-end product rather than a budget gym basic.

Sublimated Performance Knits for Printed Team Kits

If your product needs a full-color, edge-to-edge printed design - team uniforms, sponsor logos, gradient patterns - you need a polyester knit engineered for dye-sublimation printing, not a cotton blend. Sublimation dye bonds to polyester fibers under heat, producing vivid, permanent, wash-resistant color that a cotton fabric simply can't hold the same way. This is the fabric family behind soccer kits, basketball jerseys, and any uniform with a genuinely custom, full-coverage print rather than a single embroidered or heat-pressed logo.

Frequently Asked Questions

Q: Can I request a specific GSM for my order?

Yes - specifying a target GSM in your tech pack (or asking us to recommend one for your use case) is standard practice and helps avoid mismatched expectations between the sample and bulk run.

Q: Can you match a fabric swatch I send you?

In most cases yes. Send a physical swatch or a clear description of the fabric feel and use case, and our team will source the closest match or confirm if an exact match isn't feasible.

Q: Does fabric choice affect MOQ?

It can. Fabrics that require dye-sublimation setup or less common blends may carry a higher minimum than a basic cotton fleece or French terry order - ask upfront when you share your fabric preference.
