FOB (Free on Board) means the manufacturer's responsibility - and the price you're quoted - ends once your goods are loaded onto the shipping vessel at the export port; you arrange and pay for freight and insurance from there. CIF (Cost, Insurance, and Freight) means the manufacturer's quoted price already includes shipping and insurance to your destination port. Neither is universally "better" - which one makes sense depends on whether you already have a freight forwarder and how much control you want over the shipping leg.

FOB (Free on Board) Explained

Under FOB terms, the factory handles export customs clearance and loading at the port of origin (for us, that's a port serving Sialkot's export corridor), and your quoted price stops there. You - or your freight forwarder - take over from that point, arranging the vessel, paying ocean freight, and handling import clearance at your destination. FOB gives you more control and often a lower total cost if you already have freight relationships, but it also means more coordination on your end.

CIF (Cost, Insurance, and Freight) Explained

Under CIF terms, the manufacturer books and pays for the ocean freight and marine insurance to your named destination port as part of the quoted price. This is the simpler option for a first-time importer with no existing freight forwarder relationship - one quote, one point of contact, less to coordinate - though it typically costs somewhat more than arranging freight yourself under FOB, since the factory is managing (and pricing in) that logistics layer.

Typical Payment Structure for a First Order

For sample orders, payment is usually handled via Western Union, MoneyGram, or a direct bank transfer - small enough amounts that a full trade-finance structure isn't necessary. For bulk production orders, the standard structure is a 50% deposit to initiate production, with the remaining 50% balance due upon completion, before export dispatch. This split protects both sides: the factory isn't financing your full order out of pocket, and you're not paying in full before a single unit has been produced.

Why Sialkot's Export Infrastructure Matters

Sialkot is one of Pakistan's primary export hubs, with established logistics relationships for both express air couriers and container sea freight already built around the sportswear and sporting goods industry specifically. That matters practically: it means shorter lead times to get your order actually moving once production finishes, rather than routing through a city with no established freight infrastructure for this category.

Frequently Asked Questions

Q: Which Incoterm should a first-time buyer choose?

If you don't already have a freight forwarder, CIF is usually simpler - one quote covers shipping and insurance. If you have existing freight relationships or want more control over cost, FOB often works out cheaper.

Q: How do payment terms work for a first order?

Samples are typically paid via Western Union, MoneyGram, or bank transfer. Bulk orders follow a 50% deposit to start production, with the remaining 50% due before export dispatch.

Q: Do you handle customs paperwork?

We handle export-side documentation and customs clearance from Pakistan. Import-side customs in your destination country is generally your (or your freight forwarder's) responsibility, though we can provide any export documentation your customs broker needs.
